Lots of Testing Going on at Crestwood
Lots of Testing Going on at Crestwood
Last week the students completed their first FAST test. This is a test that is given to all students in the state of Iowa to measure their individual fluency and reading comprehension/skills. The fluency assessment is given to the students by myself, the teacher, one on one, and the other part, titled AReading, is done individually on the iPads. These scores are then used to determine which students need interventions in the area of literacy. Scores from these assessments will be shared with parents at conferences in November. Students will retake the same FAST assessments mid year and at the end of the year.

This week we will be taking the MAPs testing. Hopefully everyone is familiar with these assessments as the students have done them since 1st grade. We will be taking Reading on Tuesday, Language on Wednesday, and Math on Thursday. These assessments are not timed, students work at their own pace, and scores are analyzed by teachers upon completion.
The students will also be taking their first math assessment on Friday for unit 1. It is a review unit that the 3rd grade teachers have revised to match the Iowa Core. This assessment will cover recognizing time, counting money, making change, recognizing patterns in numbers and basic beginning skills. I have worked with a few students on advanced skills, such as elapsed time, so a those students may have this on their assessment as well.
So it is a busy week for 3B. I know they are going to knock my socks off with their great effort. Parents at home, remember to make sure your child gets a good nights rest and eats a great breakfast every morning to help them be successful at school not only on assessments but daily activities.

Marcus Brigstocke on Religion
Marcus Brigstocke on Religion
Heres a clip of Marcus Brigstocke moaning about religion on the BBCs The Now Show. Its really rather splendid.
Currently I am stuck in the office 24-7, but thankfully the BBCs mighty iPlayer is keeping me sane, and finally made it possible for me to watch Brigstockes The Late Edition, which in turn lead me to a wikipedia which started one of them damn web cascades - which produced this vid.

Manuscripts Roasting on an Open Fire Jack Daniels Nipping at My Nose
Manuscripts Roasting on an Open Fire Jack Daniels Nipping at My Nose
Im just getting ready to buckle down and send out a bunch of queries for my middle grade manuscript, but it suddenly occurred to me that this time of year might be the worst time to try to get agents and editors attention. As the holidays approach, do agents and editors tend to push stuff off their desks to clear the decks for their time off, and therefore reject more than usual?Yes!
Or do they store up queries and manuscripts, knowing they might have more spare time to read over the holidays?Yes!
Or does it just not matter?Yes!
Look, you have to try to remember that there are tons of different editors, and theyre not all using the same brain. There are about as many different workstyles as there are editors. So some of them will do one of the things youve mentioned above, and some will do other things you havent even thought of. I plan to burn all my outstanding reading in a bonfire while cackling / singing christmas carols.

“China’s manufacturing sector had a weak start to second, with total new business declining at the quickest rate in a year while production stagnated,” Annabel Fiddes, economist at Markit, said. “Fewer new orders appeared to stem from weaker domestic demand, as new business from abroad showed tentative signs of improvement.”

Loving them to death or providing a third eye My views on Tiger Tourism
Loving them to death or providing a third eye My views on Tiger Tourism

"A tiger is a large-hearted gentleman with boundless courage and that when he is exterminated - as exterminated he will be unless public opinion rallies to his support - India will be the poorer by having lost the finest of her fauna." - Jim Corbett
As I write this post, the Supreme Court of India is hearing a petition by Prayatna - a Bhopal based NGO led by prominent activist Ajay Dubey. The petition, amongst other things seeks to ban tiger tourism in the country as it exists today. The alternative they suggest is for tourism (read safaris) to happen in the fringes of the park, making the core zones of our tiger reserves inviolate. The rationale behind this is that if traditional forest dwellers have left their ancestral land to give the tigers solitude and peace, how can tourists still have access to these woods? There are theories which state that the tiger cannot breed in the constant presence of humans and therefore tourists should stay out. After all the Sariska tigers have not bred successfully since their reintroduction in 2005 - a reason for this (probably) being the presence of villages in the forest. Tourism doesnt also bring too many benefits to local communities. Krithi Karanths 2011 study titled Conservation Letters revealed some startling statistics - local residents get less than 0.5% of the revenues from wildlife tourism. Even more startling is the revelation is that the park itself gets less than 5% of the revenues and close to 95% goes into private hands.
So then, shouldnt we ban tourism? It seems to bring no benefits to the local community and it disturbs the tiger. If anything it seems to encroach on the tigers last strongholds. As it turns out, my view is quite the opposite. The tiger is Indias national animal. As Steve Winter would put it, the tiger is our bald eagle. The beauty of tiger tourism in this country is in the fact that anyone with ?500 ($9.17) can share a vehicle with other people and stand a chance to see the charismatic beast. People cant feel the desire to protect what they cant see or experience. If seeing a tiger in the wild becomes the privilege of just a handful of experts, it will probably mean an end to the love and passion several Indians feel for the beast and its protection. Last I checked, spreading the word was amongst the top few things one could do to save the tiger. When no one can see the tiger anymore, what word do you spread? That theres a mythical beast in the woods which incidentally we dont have access to anymore?
"Nobody will be interested in protecting something that they are not allowed to see or experience. Banning tourism in National Parks and sanctuaries will be disastrous for the tiger in particular, and an open invitation to poachers and the timber mafia." Belinda Wright

A few days back watchful tourists reported the presence of two suspicious youths in the core area of Tadoba Tiger Reserve. My friend Chirdeep wrote this rather sorrowful story of Maasti - the tiger with an amputated leg. The truth is that Maasti perhaps wouldnt even be alive today had it not been for a watchful wildlife enthusiast on safari. Tourism gives tiger conservation the third eye it woefully needs. In the current situation where patrolling is so ineffective that tigers get killed despite a red alert in the state, tourists end up being free watchdogs for the forest department. This is a service that we cant snub.
We cant wish away the issue of disturbance to tigers from tourists. That being said, we have to look at Tadoba and Ranthambhore - two of our most visited tiger reserves. Over the last year the tiger population at Tadoba has gone from 53 to 69. Ranthambhore has a baby boom despite the drones of tourists that visit the park. Theres circumstantial evidence in Kanha, Pench, Bandhavgarh and almost every other park that tigers are multiplying in the core zones despite tourism. Yes tourism needs regulation. Illegal constructions on the banks of the Kosi river need to stop. We need unhindered tiger corridors and if there are resorts that block this area, we need to bring them down. We need a strict clampdown on boorish behaviour in parks. Guides, mahouts and drivers need education to keep the interests of the animals first. We need to pay them well, so their livelihood isnt just dependent on the tips they collect in the seven months that the parks are open. As tourists we need to draw our own line of ethics. Do we want to do all it takes for that tiger sighting or are we willing to let go every now and then?

Theres no point in slamming the elephant assisted tiger sightings of Central India - they are perhaps the most organised and well behaved viewing opportunities for tourists. Under the supervision of park rangers, the elephants ferry tourists four at a time for a five minute, regulated view of the tiger. The tiger is free to move into the woods and if it moves in too deep, the elephants dont pursue. The mahouts keep the tourists in check. The tourist safaris are a different kettle of fish though. The guides and drivers are too scared of losing their tip to admonish ill-mannered guests. While that is the reality of todays situation, every tourist in the wild has a responsibility to self regulate.
Last but certainly not the least the forest department needs to relieve the pressure of tourism by creating alternate opportunities for visitors. The buffer zone safari at Tadoba, the promotion of Magadhi and Khitauli in Bandhavgarh, responsible fringe tourism by resorts like Camp Forktail Creek are all steps in the right direction. The tourism industry also needs a fair bit of transparency. The opaque, fax based booking system at Dhikala and Corbetts forest rest houses needs to go. The nexus of the Kosi lodges and the forest booking clerks (read this report) needs to break and make way for responsible tourism. The agent dominated safari booking system at Ranthambhore needs to go - it needs transparency in booking zones and vehicles. The whimsical allotment of prime routes to the tourism mafia needs to stop. The more we can weed out corruption from the wildlife tourism infrastructure in this country, the more accessible we make it to the common man. And after all, we cant save the tiger if the common man doesnt care about it.
"Wildlife tourists carry cameras, not axes. They do not poach, do not submerge forests with dams... They are being unjustifiably blamed for killing tigers." Vishal Singh - TOFT
I sincerely hope that the Supreme Court acts wisely in its decision on the Prayatna case. Tourism when well regulated can be a great tool for conservation. I cant express in words how it has opened my mind and enriched my life. I hope this doesnt remain a privilege I speak of in the past tense. The next generation of Indians deserves to still enjoy our wilderness just as I have in the past few years.

Management Bandwidth Prioritize Online Games on Mikrotik
Management Bandwidth Prioritize Online Games on Mikrotik

In order to make the Internet Network that is used for the purposes. So inconsiderate and bad for the future if you think should be expel the clients who likes to download files and video streams when you want to prioritize the online games on the internet network that you have for the clients. Bandwidth Management for the Online Games on Mikrotik absolutely necessary, so that all interests can be run in proportion and balanced.
The internet purposes for the online games has become a very sensitive thing before browsing for the client. Without ignoring the interests of others, we just need to control downloads and video streams are hugely wasteful of the bandwidth, giving breath to browsing, and giving priority and make safe to online games. So that the Internet network that we build can be used for various purposes, and the services that we provided to the client to be open to a wider variety of interests.
Our focus now is how do we allocate bandwidth for the online games among with various other interests. The most appropriate way to capture the packets of online games is using TCP and UDP destination ports of online games. Actually, when a running online games, it doesnt use a lot of bandwidth, something taht we have to do is giving bandwidth that more stable by adjusting with highest priority to the others. TCP and UDP ports of online games usually are at a recommendation and referenced by online games itself, if not, it would be very difficult to know the destination ports that are really relevant.
TCP and UDP destination port of online games are usually very privacy. Many free tools there is not too much to help us in order to find the destination port of an online game. Have you try to use Wireshark or Curr Port to find the ports destination of the online games? which can only detect packets that pass through connections of local port only, which will be always changing as far as my experience in an effort to determine the TCP and UDP ports of an online game. How about you?
1. Here is references of some TCP and UDP ports commonly used for the online games, I have included in the mangle scripts for the mark connection of online games:

Copy the above Mangle scripts, select that only you use and paste to the new terminal window of mikrotik winbox, to capture the connection for the variety of online games! The results are as shown below!

description :
- comment = "xxx" is the name of an online game that we want to capture the connection
- src-address = 192.168.1.0/24 is range of the clients IP addresses that you have, to separate the online games on each clients
- dst-port = xxxx-xxxx is the ports of TCP or UDP of the online games
2. After making the mark connection for all online games that used, the next is making mark packets for every clients.
If you want to make the mark packet online games into one to all clients, you do not need src-address = 192.168.1.11/24 on mark connetion on mangle rule, remove src-address of the mark connection above, then make the packet into single packet the online game as the script below!
/ip firewall mangle add action=mark-packet chain=prerouting comment="GAME ALL CLIENTS" connection-mark="GAME-conn" disabled=no new-packet-mark=GAME-pkt passthrough=no /queue tree add name="GAME ALL CLIENTS" parent=global-out packet-mark=GAME-pkt limit-at=220k queue=default priority=7 max-limit=220k burst-limit=256k burst-threshold=165k burst-time=2s
But here I have separated the packets of online game for every clients, the scripts for the packets as shown below!
/ip firewall mangle add action=mark-packet chain=forward comment="BILLING-GAME" src-address=192.168.1.11 connection-mark="GAME-conn" disabled=no new-packet-mark=GAME-BILL-pkt passthrough=no add action=mark-packet chain=forward comment="CLIENT1-GAME" src-address=192.168.1.17 connection-mark="GAME-conn" disabled=no new-packet-mark=GAME-CLIENT1-pkt passthrough=no add action=mark-packet chain=forward comment="CLIENT2-GAME" src-address=192.168.1.16 connection-mark="GAME-conn" disabled=no new-packet-mark=GAME-CLIENT2-pkt passthrough=no add action=mark-packet chain=forward comment="CLIENT3-GAME" src-address=192.168.1.15 connection-mark="GAME-conn" disabled=no new-packet-mark=GAME-CLIENT3-pkt passthrough=no add action=mark-packet chain=forward comment="CLIENT4-GAME" src-address=192.168.1.14 connection-mark="GAME-conn" disabled=no new-packet-mark=GAME-CLIENT4-pkt passthrough=no add action=mark-packet chain=forward comment="CLIENT5-GAME" src-address=192.168.1.20 connection-mark="GAME-conn" disabled=no new-packet-mark=GAME-CLIENT5-pkt passthrough=no add action=mark-packet chain=forward comment="CLIENT6-GAME" src-address=192.168.1.21 connection-mark="GAME-conn" disabled=no new-packet-mark=GAME-CLIENT6-pkt passthrough=no add action=mark-packet chain=forward comment="MASTER-GAME" src-address=192.168.1.12 connection-mark="GAME-conn" disabled=no new-packet-mark=GAME-MASTER-pkt passthrough=no
Adjust src-address ip address on the mark packets above according with computer clients that you have, then paste to the new terminal window on mikrotik winbox, the result is shown as below!

3. The next well make queue tree based on connection packet of mangle rule of the online games per clients and we can limit and give with the highest priority. Changes the simple queue as maximum bandwidth per clients with the priority = 2. After that we make queue tree for online games with the priority = 1 this is for the online games is not lose with the browsing. The script for the online games queue tree per clients like below!
/queue tree add name=BillingGame parent=global-out packet-mark=GAME-BILL-pkt limit-at=200k queue=default priority=1 max-limit=200k burst-limit=256k burst-threshold=150k burst-time=2s add name=Client1Game parent=global-out packet-mark=GAME-CLIENT1-pkt limit-at=200k queue=default priority=1 max-limit=200k burst-limit=256k burst-threshold=150k burst-time=2s add name=Client2Game parent=global-out packet-mark=GAME-CLIENT2-pkt limit-at=200k queue=default priority=1 max-limit=200k burst-limit=256k burst-threshold=150k burst-time=2s add name=Client3Game parent=global-out packet-mark=GAME-CLIENT3-pkt limit-at=200k queue=default priority=1 max-limit=200k burst-limit=256k burst-threshold=150k burst-time=2s add name=Client4Game parent=global-out packet-mark=GAME-CLIENT4-pkt limit-at=200k queue=default priority=1 max-limit=200k burst-limit=256k burst-threshold=150k burst-time=2s add name=Client5Game parent=global-out packet-mark=GAME-CLIENT5-pkt limit-at=200k queue=default priority=1 max-limit=200k burst-limit=256k burst-threshold=150k burst-time=2s add name=Client6Game parent=global-out packet-mark=GAME-CLIENT6-pkt limit-at=200k queue=default priority=1 max-limit=200k burst-limit=256k burst-threshold=150k burst-time=2s add name=MasterGame parent=global-out packet-mark=GAME-MASTER-pkt limit-at=200k queue=default priority=1 max-limit=200k burst-limit=256k burst-threshold=150k burst-time=2s
As usually for more quickly just copy the online games queue tree above to the new terminal window mikrotik winbox, the result like the picture below!

Note. If you want to limit and prioritize the online games that no TCP and UDP ports that are not referenced by the online games itself, it would be difficult part to find a relevant ports by self, even you have such a wireshark tool or using torch on mikrotik. Make sure the ports that was captured is really working all times. There are some kind of the online games has dynamic IP, TCP and UDP that makes so difficult to captured the ports, in this case I just used the content site to capture it.
For more clearly I have made the scripts above using mikrotik winbox and to prove the scripts above works, lets watch the article video above! for the newest method, dont to see the Perfection II of the Bandwidth Mangement!

LSG Webinar Social learning on a shoe string
LSG Webinar Social learning on a shoe string
While I dont have to go through the rigmarole of doing this stuff at ThoughtWorks - we already have a pretty robust social learning infrastructure; I can imagine todays webinar should be very useful for most L&D professionals.
So with this, Ill begin my live blogged notes to cover a session that promises to be really useful and timely for the kind of world weve stepped into as learning professionals.
The big question -- why should we be looking at Social Learning today?
Lots of answers to this one:- 70% of learning is informal
- Its power and impact
- Relevant and contextualised to work
- People learn from each other
- It ties to modern technology and makes learning more effectivel
- Were in an increasingly mobile world
- Lots of pressure to do things quickly
- Generational change in the workplace
- Growth of social media in recent years
When facing information overload, making it impossible to keep up -- social learning can help manage the load.
Were being driven to be more agile and add value -- this means we need to work smart.
We are increasingly mobile - yet we need to collaborate.
Right you are, Hanif!
So, what is social learning?
On a shoestring, though?
Most of our tools are new, most models are new, most organisations are very early on in their journey so from that perspective we need to manage the risk of these projects. So the shoestring comes in so that you can put something up without risking in everything based on industry buzz.There are heaps of free tools:
- Elgg
- Yammer
- YouTube
- Viigo
- RSS
- Google Wave
Saffrons take on Social Learning
Hanif showed us what theyve come up with using Elgg, at Saffron. Seems to have heaps of features:
- User Profiles - to understand who does what and what are they good at?
- Blogs
- Social Bookmarks - for generating collective wisdom (ala delicious)
- File sharing
- Social Networks
- Groups - great for communities of practice
Swatch is another great example of using Elgg to create something really usable, pretty and successful. Their site is a nice way to connect with the external world. Wow! I knew Elgg was great, but not this great!
For the umpteenth time in the day another of my favourite tools gets mentioned - Yammer. Were using Yammer quite successfully and at my team, weve done away with standups because of Yammer and we use this greatly for knowledge sharing.
Something Hanif brought up was around using external tools like Linkedin to build your company network using group features. I think this is something we should do more and more. The most important thing to remember is that these tools are mobile friendly -- so the more we use these, the more we can help people learn in the short time spaces they have. This is obviously arguable given learning requires commitment. That said, doing assessments, showing video, status updates, etc can happen using mobiles. Why make it difficult -- social media should make our life easy!
Building Vibrant Communities
According to Hanif, the key to doing this is around 6 major points:- Address a business need - if you cant articulate this, its perhaps not worth it!
- Consider the organisational culture - not every culture can sustain things like this with existing culture. How can you help make collaboration a part of your culture? What evangelism and nurturing will your communities need?
- Use the term knowledge media not social media - Andrew Mcafees said this too!
- Involve stakeholders
- Find some champions and just do it
- Measure and learn - everyones learning and you need to adapt quickly with what works and discard what doesnt work at the right speed.
- Research and agility -- we find solutions faster, we learn faster
- Talent Management - you can soon start to recognise your best people and spend less time on archaic performance management processes
- Driver for creativity -- people learn from each other, so they are likely to build on each others ideas and raise the innovation quotient of the company.
- Start on a shoestring
- Find and communicate the business need and benefits
- Use it as part of a blend -- you dont want to put all your eggs in the social learning basket. That may just not provide the breadth your audience needs. Theres a place for fomal learning, elearning, virtual classrooms and everything else.

Look Ma Im on TV!
Look Ma Im on TV!
Day... Whatever.
Okay, so I know I said Id slowly wean you guys off the Lawrence/Julie & Julia Project by spending the next few days updating you all of my illicit activities in Denver... but then... I had other stuff to do. Or something... you know... final exams to study for... a Bon Iver show to see... a lot of masturbating to catch up on... you know what? I dont have to explain myself to you.
I watched Julie & Julia 365 every day for a year and blogged about it. Ive earned this blogging vacation. But now that Im on winter break, I figure nows as good a time as any to tell you about the time I was on TV for watching movies.
![]() |
| Doomed to be forever known as "Lawrence Dai, Julie & Julia Blogger" |
So as many of you know, I was flown out to Denver for the final viewing party. And as a part of that press junket, (I know! A press junket! What? I still dont know what a "junket" is!) I was briefly interviewed on FOX Denvers morning show Everyday! (an oddly fitting name for a show, given my... accomplishment)

My part starts about 5:15 into this video. It was pretty fucking surreal being interviewed on live television. I wont lie--I was pretty worried that they were gonna ask me about Amy Adams and Id just start swearing prolifically. But I think I ended up doing okay... see for yourself.

Also, heres the cooking segment they did after my interview. Chris Parente, the host, borrowed my Juila Child wig and pearls and did his own little JC impression, but I think I could give him a run for his money.
Anyway, thats all for now--I also appeared on a Denver CBS affiliate and a PBS entertainment show, but those arent on the internet yet--watch them if you want, but I wont be offended if youve got better things to do. Just thought itd be cool to share WHAT YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH BY WATCHING THE SAME MOVIE EVERY DAY. Check back tomorrow for:
- The opening trailer to my party!
- Highlights of the party itself!
- An exclusive interview with AMY ADAMS MOM!!!
- A response from the REAL Julie Powell!!
- Other things!
And... by the end of the week, I plan on announcing my FOLLOW-UP BLOGGING PROJECT to the world. L/J&J was just a warm-up for this shit, people. So stick around.

Mastering the One on One Meeting
Mastering the One on One Meeting
Julia Austin, Chief Technology Officer at DigitalOcean and advisor to many startups in the Boston area, has written a terrific blog post about how to conduct effective one-on-one meetings with your direct reports. I highly recommend reading the entire post. Here are a few highlights:
- "Book a regular cadence of 1:1s. They should not be ad-hoc. Its ok to skip one every once and awhile, but having it locked into the calendar is your commitment to being there for your employee. Decide the best cadence with them (weekly or every other week? 30 minutes or an hour?) and what the format should be your office or theirs, a walk, or maybe grabbing coffee. Different formats work for different employees...
- "24 hours or so before the meeting, email the employee a list of what youd like to cover. Try to do a split between strategic, tactical and personal items and always ask your employee what they want to cover too."
- "Do not monopolize the conversation. This is for you each to get time to talk. Pause often and make sure there is opportunity for discussion and questions."
- "It is important to always follow up any 1:1 (or scheduled meeting, for that matter) with notes on what was discussed, decisions made and, if relevant, any constructive feedback that will be measured going forward."

Louis Tomlinson and Steve Aoki perform Just Hold on! Finals The X Fa
Louis Tomlinson and Steve Aoki debuted their new song "Just Hold On" on The X Factor UK stage at Londons Wembley Arena Saturday night (Dec. 10). The One Direction members late mother, Johannah Deakin, who lost her battle with leukemia at age 42 in the early hours of Dec. 7, wished for her son to go on with the surprise performance.
"Its not over until its all been said," sings Tomlinson on the track. "Its not over until your dying breath. So what do you want them to say when youre gone? That you gave up or that you kept going on? What do you do when a chapter ends? Do you close the book and never read it again? Where do you go when your storys done? You can be who you were or who youll become."
"All the support has been incredible! Lets do this together tonight," Tomlinson tweeted before the show.

Make sure write cache is enabled on your RAID controller
Make sure write cache is enabled on your RAID controller
Using a write cache protected by battery (BBWC) is well known and one of the best practices in RDBMS world. But I have frequently seen situations that people do not set write cache properly. Sometimes they just forget to enable write cache. Sometimes write cache is disabled even though they say they set properly.
Make sure that BBWC is enabled. If not enabled, you will be able to easily get better performance by just enabling it. The following is a DBT-2 example.
Write cache is disabled:
# iostat -xm 10
avg-cpu: %user %nice %system %iowait %steal %idle
21.16 0.00 6.14 29.77 0.00 42.93
Device: rrqm/s wrqm/s r/s w/s rMB/s
sdb 2.60 389.01 283.12 47.35 4.86
wMB/s avgrq-sz avgqu-sz await svctm %util
2.19 43.67 4.89 14.76 3.02 99.83
Write cache is enabled:
# iostat -xm 10
avg-cpu: %user %nice %system %iowait %steal %idle
40.03 0.00 16.51 16.52 0.00 26.94
Device: rrqm/s wrqm/s r/s w/s rMB/s
sdb 6.39 368.53 543.06 490.41 6.71
wMB/s avgrq-sz avgqu-sz await svctm %util
3.90 21.02 3.29 3.20 0.90 92.66
Both run same applications(DBT-2), but the server activity was significantly different each other. I got 85% better result when write cache is enabled.
Checking write cache and battery status
BBWC is mostly equipped with H/W raid controller so operational command depends on products. Here is an example of "arcconf" command result.
# /usr/StorMan/arcconf GETCONFIG 1 AL
...
--------------------------------------------------------
Controller Battery Information
--------------------------------------------------------
Status : Optimal
Over temperature : No
Capacity remaining : 99 percent
Time remaining (at current draw): 3 days, 1 hours, 11 minutes
--------------------------------------------------------
Logical device information
--------------------------------------------------------
Logical device number 0
...
Read-cache mode : Disabled
Write-cache mode : Enabled (write-back)
Write-cache setting: Enabled (write-back) when
protected by battery
...
--------------------------------------------------------
Physical Device information
--------------------------------------------------------
Device #0
Device is a Hard drive
...
Size : 140009 MB
Write Cache : Disabled (write-through)
...
Write cache should be enabled only when battery backup is working. In other words:
- Write cache on logical device (H/W raid controller) is enabled when protected by battery
- Write cache on physical device is disabled
- The battery has enough capacity and long enough remaining time
I recommend DBAs to monitor write cache status regularly (adding this to your monitoring scripts), including battery status checking. Long time ago I was asked for urgent help to fix a problem that application performance suddenly went down. I looked into problems then found that write cache unexpectedly turned off because a battery was expired. If you successfully detected that battery capacity was decreased before write cache was disabled, you would be able to take an action before server performance suddenly goes down (i.e. allocating scheduled down time in order to replace the battery).
Quick health check with mysql commands
If you are not familiar with H/W raid controller specific command but want to check write cache status quickly, using mysqlslap or stored procedure is easy.
mysqlslap:
$ mysql -e "set global innodb_flush_log_at_trx_commit=1"
$ mysqlslap --concurrency=1 --iterations=1 --engine=innodb
--auto-generate-sql --auto-generate-sql-load-type=write
--number-of-queries=100000
stored procedure:
create table t (c1 int) engine=innodb;
delimiter //
create procedure sp1(IN i INTEGER)
BEGIN
DECLARE done INTEGER DEFAULT 0;
WHILE i > 0 DO
insert into t values (1);
SET i = i - 1;
END WHILE;
END;
//
delimiter ;
set global innodb_flush_log_at_trx_commit=1;
call sp1(100000);
You will be able to insert thousands of records per second if write cache is enabled. If disabled, only hundreds of inserts per second is possible, so you can easily check.

Many Thoughts On Skyrim
Many Thoughts On Skyrim

With about fifty hours in, Ive completed about as much of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (on the 360) as Im likely to. Its been a great break from fixing bugs in our upcoming games. Skyrim is more fun that iOS development. You heard it here first.
Ive done the main quest plus whatever side quests were interesting or insane enough to attract my interest. I dont want to write a full review because it would be entirely redundant. Everyone already knows its an excellent game.
Instead, I wanted to say a few quick things about what worked (or sometimes didnt) in Skyrim.
The Quest Writing
For a game this size, with multiple quest chains long and involved enough to feel like full games in themselves, uneven writing is to be expected. Some of the major quests were, indeed, better than others in this regard.
I thought the best writing, going away, was in the Dark Brotherhood (assassins guild) quest. It was over the top, deranged, and entirely fun. Alas, since players tend to shy away from the evil and deranged, most people wont get to enjoy this bit of concentrated insanity. Its a pity. In Skyrim, having a voice in your head telling you to kill people isnt a handicap. Its a career choice.
Sadly, I thought the least involving writing was in the main game quest, which was just another retelling of, "See that guy over there? Hes evil. Kill that guy." Except, in this case, "that guy" is a dragon without much dialogue or presence in the story. The storyline would have been much more involving if the player were able to have more interaction with the main villain.
On the bright side, while the Empire and Rebel quest lines get a tad repetitive (with all those fort assaults), they also do a great job of depicting an epic struggle, full of sacrifices, risks, and hard choices. The bit where the Jarl of Whiterun tries to decide which side to support was really suspenseful and nicely done.
Selling Items
All fantasy RPGs have tedious inventory management and selling of stuff. Its just part of the genre. In recent years, designers have looked for ways to make the economic side of things go faster and eat up less precious play-time. The best example of this is in Torchlight you can have your pet dog take all your junk back to town and sell it for you.
Thank you! More killing, less realism!
But in Skyrim ... Look. If you want to have each shop only buy a limited range of items, fine. And if you want to have shops have a limited amount of gold, fine. And if you want to have stolen items only bought by one character, who doesnt have much money on hand and is well out of the way, fine. But having all three of these means that you hate me.
You might say, Hey, they want a more realistic feeling world. Fine. I get that. Just bear in mind that when someone says he played Skyrim for 60 hours, at least 20 of those were spent trying to find someone who will buy eleven pairs of elven boots.
(Yes, I know you can buy feats to change how this works. I prefer to spend my feats on the sort of combat skills that keep me from getting slaughtered the moment I try to ride to the next town, thank you.)
Killing Elves
You spend a lot of time in Skyrim killing elves. In this world, elves are obnoxious and ugly, and you kill them.
This is awesome.
The World Map
The roads in Skyrim are really nicely laid out. I spent just the right amount of time wandering around lost. In a big world like this, you want the player to get lost sometimes. Its a rare pleasure to have a game you can actually get lost in.
On the other hand, Ive looked at a lot of maps in my life, and Ive never seen one where the cartographer drew in the clouds. Having the in-game world map be a depiction of Skyrim as seen from space, clouds and all, is malicious. It really obscures where you can and cant go.
(Also, the printed map that comes with the game has inaccurate and incomplete roads, and the roads are the most important part of the map. Paper maps are awesome, but the developers should give them a once-over to make sure theyre accurate. This is just the sort of extra that gets people to buy instead of rent.)
Arrow In the Knee
I know Im supposed to think the whole "Arrow in the knee" meme is overplayed. Sorry. Still cracks me up every time. Especially whenever a guard passive-aggressively says it to me as I run by.
Awesome Evilness
If you are ever in Markarth and some guy asks you to help investigate an abandoned house, do that quest. Its really, really, really evil and deranged. Its audacity should be rewarded with play. In fact, play through it in front of your loved ones. My wife watched me play it and, a few weeks later, she can almost make eye contact with me again.
Its a Great Game
OK. Done nitpicking. Its buggy, sprawling, uneven, and an entirely brilliant game experience. It overwhelms you with sheer size. You cant go for a horsey ride for five minutes without the game trying to distract you with some new cool thing. You can simply get lost in it.
After what seems like an endless parade of games where you mindlessly shoot/slash your way down a corridor, see a cutscene, and then are funneled down another corridor, Skyrim is a delight.
