Lots of Testing Going on at Crestwood

Last week the students completed their first FAST test. This is a test that is given to all students in the state of Iowa to measure their individual fluency and reading comprehension/skills. The fluency assessment is given to the students by myself, the teacher, one on one, and the other part, titled AReading, is done individually on the iPads. These scores are then used to determine which students need interventions in the area of literacy. Scores from these assessments will be shared with parents at conferences in November. Students will retake the same FAST assessments mid year and at the end of the year.

This week we will be taking the MAPs testing. Hopefully everyone is familiar with these assessments as the students have done them since 1st grade. We will be taking Reading on Tuesday, Language on Wednesday, and Math on Thursday. These assessments are not timed, students work at their own pace, and scores are analyzed by teachers upon completion.

The students will also be taking their first math assessment on Friday for unit 1. It is a review unit that the 3rd grade teachers have revised to match the Iowa Core. This assessment will cover recognizing time, counting money, making change, recognizing patterns in numbers and basic beginning skills. I have worked with a few students on advanced skills, such as elapsed time, so a those students may have this on their assessment as well.

So it is a busy week for 3B. I know they are going to knock my socks off with their great effort. Parents at home, remember to make sure your child gets a good nights rest and eats a great breakfast every morning to help them be successful at school not only on assessments but daily activities.

Lots of Fun for Arbor Day!

Even though it was a little chilly, we all survived and learned a ton on our Arbor Day field trip last Thursday! The stations that the students rotated thru were:
* Trees
* Planting Seeds
* Wildlife
* The Watershed
* Bird Observations

As some of you already know, each 3rd grader was given a seedling, young tree, to take home and plant. They were all very excited! It was fun for them to hear me tell about planting my kids trees when they were in 3rd grade and how big they are now. They thought that was very cool. I hope that the students found a great spot to plant their trees and enjoy watching them grow over the years.

Looking for the perfect pair of Jeans

It’s been awhile since I last bought a pair of jeans. So my mission this week is to find and purchase the perfect pair of jeans. Actually two jeans, one for use with high heeled shoes and one for use with flat shoes. Therefore, I have done some research on this subject:

Petite size: choose straight leg, no boot cut, no cuffs

Tummy Troubles: choose a mid-rise that hits across the belly, not above or below it.

Large Hips: mid-rise, straight or trouser leg which falls from the hips to create a longer-looking leg line

Big Booties (Derrière): Stay away from back flap pockets or back pockets with heavy embellishment or embroidery and find a rise that fits properly in the crotch. Flare leg openings helps to slenderize your body.

So ... the next time you hear from me on this topic will be the day that I locate my perfect pair of jeans and you may even catch a glimpse of me in them if my new scanner helps out in this process.

Marvel Contest of Champions 1 1 0 APK

Kabam has updated Marvel Contest of Champions with some improvements and new item. It brings new Abilities and updated Status Effects for its many players to check out. The new update 1.1.0 also introduces new Quest Content, which has new Adaptoids, including the rare Treasure Adaptoid. And, yes, there are also improvements to PvP matchmaking and leaderboards. The quests are great and really easy and with the crystals that give you the different champions. Thats not all, mind. The new update also makes it harder to fight, thus more challenging (not easy to use heavy attacks now).

I am furious!

The Gay blaming Church of England has just manipulated an honest situation for devious ends in such a way that to critize them, only makes yourself look foolish.

But Ill step up to that challenge. I look foolish all the time.

Theyre trying to get video game manufactures to sign up to new “sacred digital guidelines” to prevent future “virtual desecration.”

Whilst those terms roll around your head and their dubious and insidious nature exposes themselves heres a summary.

PS3 launch game is set in the 1940s UK where aliens have attacked the planet, and we are fighting back. Manchester Cathedral is turned into a hospital. Aliens attack, and you defend it. CoE becomes enraged. Sony apologizes unreservedly. Smelling opportunity thats not enough for the COE.

Let ignoring 4 as thats the carrot theyre using to support their proposition. Now the first three look fine at first glance, but lets analyze them.

For number 2 they use the strongest wording they can. They want you to presume that they are under copyright. To presume that you need to obey number 3. Listen CoE - Manchester Cathedral is a great example. Its construction started in 1215. Copyright is not meant to last 800 fucking years. But more importantly your "sacred" building was funded by fucking feudalism. You tithed and bleed generations of poor peasents who lived in hovels to produce that beautiful building. Our ancestors living on the edge of absolute poverty were brainwashed to build that building with promises of enternal bliss, whilst the "Holy Men" who lived there lived in wealth and luxury.

Manchester Cathedral is a beautiful building - but every time you look at it you should see the absolute exploitation that produced it. It should shame you.

As such you can claim no ownership of such a building.

Its the fucking definition of public domain.

What is actually going on here is an attempt to prevent dialogue. They understand the computer games (like Rock and Roll, and cinema, and TV before it) is a new media that can, and will be used to criticize and puncture the pomposity of their faith.

This is an attempt to close that dialogue down.

They want "respect" to mean "dont point out its stupid" - and theyre hiding behind pretend violence to do it.

Ngahiraka Mason from the Tuhoe tribe of Aotearoa gave an intimate summary of her own experience and understanding of relationships to mountains. They help us make decisions about difficulties we face, even when families are pitted against each other. Lots of Tulips and a Cheese Slicer

Yesterday, we drove down to Keukenhof Gardens near Amsterdam to see the tulips in bloom. The gardens are open for a limited period of about two months in spring every year. Since spring decided to make a delayed entry, the tulip season is almost upto the end of May this year.
My first connection with tulips and Holland is of the movie Silsila. I still remember how I just wanted to be there as soon as I saw the song Dekha ek khwaab toh with millions of tulips in it. I wondered how it would feel to be amongst so many flowers. I now know how it feels. And I also know that the feeling is so overwhelming that it is too difficult to be put in words. Actually, I said jokingly to my husband that I have become so used to the urban I-see-nature-only-on-my-balcony-and-nowhere-else life, that I am getting stressed looking at all those wonderful flowers. :) And nature is supposed to de-stress you!

So, is this a non-food post then? No, there IS a food connection. And that is actually one of the souvenirs I bought at the gardens. Here it is.

As usual, while I was looking for a souvenir, it was the foodie in me looking for one too. (And no, I dont suffer of Split Personality Syndrome. :)) This Cheese Slicer is what both of us agreed upon. Isnt it nice? And very souvenir-ey? And it slices cheese too!

I tried using it on the block of Parmesan that I had in the fridge, and it gave me neat, thin shavings. Now I dont know whether to use it regularly or whether to just preserve it, so that I can pass it on as a family heirloom later.

I decided to start 2013 with something playful. Over the years I have heard from many of my girlfriends that they feel quite uneasy with math. Below is my attempt to define math as something relevant, fun and hip. Please share it with the women in your life. And, let me know what you think about it.

Random : an arbitrary piece of clothing you are picking from your closet without even looking at the mess in it. Beware - if you cheat and feel the material type, buttons, zippers or, god forbid, take a peak - it will be a preudo-random item.

Average : Something you first want but then try to avoid to be.

Positive numbers: height extensions that high heels provide to you.

Negative numbers: The depths your pumps sink into the ground when you find yourself at the back yard party.

Infinity : the amount of sweets that your kids consume while you are away.

Parallel: your Sunday plans to your husbands Sunday plans during the football season. Absolutely nothing in common.

Perpendicular: your plans for the same Sunday to your teenagers plans. He needs you as a driver but for the rest please stay as far as possible.

Arithmetic series: your clothes size, sampled every decade.

Geometric series: dramatically increasing amounts of gray hair you observe monthly on your head.

Integral: the amount of cork in your platform shoes.

Derivative: the steepness of the arch of you heel.

Signal-to-noise ratio: proportion of the neatly folded items to the messy stuff in your closet.

Median: you, dividing your kids quarrels.

Acute angle: a narrow corner where you frequently want to hide.

Obtuse angle: a corner where you really are - observed and exposed.
