Look Jane look! Look at my book!
Look Jane look! Look at my book!
I have written a caption picture book (no illustrations) and was curious if I should use the word "caption" in my queries to identify it as such. Also, should I mention the word length (under 500 words)? As the term "caption book" is more common among educators than other people, I would only recommend using it only if you are submitting to an educational publisher. Otherwise, call it a leveled reader or a beginning reader.
There are very specific guidelines for vocabulary, line length, sentence length, etc. in leveled readers, so I hope you know what youre doing. Im sure beginning readers of every kind look very easy to people unfamiliar with them, but creating an honestly entertaining text for children who are still sounding out words is HARD. Current favorite: The Cat On the Mat Is Flat
Yes, do include the word count.

Love Life and Math My Life Story
Love Life and Math My Life Story
It has been my drug, my meditation, my weapon and my best friend. It fed and dressed me, led to travel, men, lavish parties and even Cuban cigars. It has placed my name on a movie screen, put my work in museums, and allowed me to manipulate cells deep inside the human brain. It is called Math.
In Russia, where I was a child in the 80s, math was respected and celebrated as a tool of progress and technological advance. It was presented to school children as a toy with tricky wrapping that one had to outwit to open. We were challenged and encouraged to tackle it. Indeed, math has become the toy of my life, my key to the world, leading me across continents, opening doors to exciting projects and people, and even assisting in the realm of romance.
I was in high school, when I applied math to my love life for the first time. I fell in love, and barricaded in the heavy, still vacuum of my room, was desperately counting clock ticks, waiting for the call from the only person whose existence mattered. My brain was justifying the silence by devising elaborate excuses for why he hadnt called yet.
It suddenly occurred to me that insecure, self-pitying anticipation could be turned into a confidence-boosting calculation of the probability of his call. What are the chances of his call, given the rumors of another girlfriend he may have had? I played with the concept of conditional probability in my mind. How does the likelihood of him being interested diminish with each passing day without a call? The results did not look promising. My attention, however, was diverted from the lost "love of my life" to a world of quiet concentration where I was queen, which significantly shrank his importance. Mathematically directing myself away from loveless depression, I tuned in to the world again and realized there would be many more love adventures to enjoy.
Immigrating to Israel, I discovered that math, more so than my religion, connected me to the young people in my new country. We spoke and read different languages, we lived through different histories, had very different worries, but we all studied math with Hindu-Arabic numerals and learned the same rules of logic. I met my future husband in a graduate math class. At that time we did not speak a common dialect but shared the language of math. Life was easy.
A rainbow of hip vocations presented themselves after I attained my math degree. The first came with delicious benefits. I was creating a product database at a chocolate factory. They had an all you can eat at work policy...
The coolest job of all was in movie special effects. The setting was like a dream: on the ocean side of Los Angeles, in a quiet nightclub atmosphere, in an abandoned military hangar, lit by a web of Christmas lights and lava lamps, surrounded by a life-size Princess Leah statue and old Star Wars spaceships, accompanied by a pet parrot. We, computer graphic programmers and animators, were making Hollywood history and immortalizing characters on the big screen.
With math I have helped move Godzilla through the cables of the Brooklyn Bridge, and created a Monet-style animation of rap singer Puff Daddy, while experimenting with painting-by-numbers. Inspired by a brilliant talk at a SIGGRAPH conference, I tried to digitally erase the cats whiskers for the movie Stuart Little. An affair with another novel technology led me to use a reflective ball to capture the direction of the sun in a vast South Carolina field when shooting the movie Patriot. Some experiments worked and some did not, but the math behind them was thrilling, adventurous and playful.
I earned my Green Card by meticulously planning a hi-jack attempt on Air Force One. It was returning from a summit in Moscow and carrying Harrison Ford as President of the United States. Our team of animators and engineers helped all the explosions look realistic, simulated Air Force One refueling in the air, and made everyone believe that the President had escaped from the plane in a computer-generated pod we created for him, which was dropped through computer-generated doors at the bottom of the plane. I even had a chance to meet the President, I mean Harrison Ford, at the Sony stage, along with other actors who were practicing jumping from a plane in front of a giant air blower. We celebrated the movie opening with an extravagant Hollywood party that included Cuban cigars.
After 9/11 I thought I could help defend my third homeland, the U.S., from terrorism by teaching computers to recognize suspicious behaviors. I abandoned the idea when I realized that my system would have detected me as one of the false-positives, when after a 15 hour trans-atlantic flight with two little kids, sleep-deprived and afraid of admitting to smuggling an apple in my bag, I would be nervously avoiding a gaze of security men.
Instead, I joined forces against an even broader insidious enemy cancer. In radio surgery, we use nifty math algorithms to target the cancer tumor with the precision of a single hair, radiating and killing the cancer cells while minimizing the damage to surrounding tissue. Math also offered a horrifying thrill when I assisted with brain surgery procedures on a death row inmate known to have killed his cell-mate back in 2005.
Now, ensconced in the mature days of parenthood, I am titillated by entertaining mathematics in our daily family routines. When figuring out the meaning of a double-negation note from school: Please mark yes or no below if your child will not attend school on Friday. When convincing myself to buy $250 winter boots because their cost-per-wear appears reasonably small: $250 / (100 cold days x 3 years ) = less than $1 per wear. When advising my son when to jump from the swing in order to enjoy the longest flight into the sand. Or, when finding an optimal home location that will minimize our familys combined commute time.
I am trying to pass on my math infatuation in the same manner that one passes traditions and language through generations. My 5-year old daughter runs around playing super girl and sings, I can be anything I want to be. I believe that the love of math may be the real super power that I can share with her, that will bring magic to her life journey.

Manuscripts Roasting on an Open Fire Jack Daniels Nipping at My Nose
Manuscripts Roasting on an Open Fire Jack Daniels Nipping at My Nose
Im just getting ready to buckle down and send out a bunch of queries for my middle grade manuscript, but it suddenly occurred to me that this time of year might be the worst time to try to get agents and editors attention. As the holidays approach, do agents and editors tend to push stuff off their desks to clear the decks for their time off, and therefore reject more than usual?Yes!
Or do they store up queries and manuscripts, knowing they might have more spare time to read over the holidays?Yes!
Or does it just not matter?Yes!
Look, you have to try to remember that there are tons of different editors, and theyre not all using the same brain. There are about as many different workstyles as there are editors. So some of them will do one of the things youve mentioned above, and some will do other things you havent even thought of. I plan to burn all my outstanding reading in a bonfire while cackling / singing christmas carols.

Maleny Pop Up Gallery aka My Mum is Awesome
Maleny Pop Up Gallery aka My Mum is Awesome
My mum is a member of a fantastic group of artists in the Maleny area. A few weeks ago, they opened the Pop Up Gallery. The twelve artists (nine painters and three 3D artists) came together in the old Pump House building, with an interest to bring more art to the town and also to revitalise empty buildings which are waiting to be leased.

They have been so successful at revitalising that old building, that it has ow been leased.
They will be there til the end of the month, so if you are in the Maleny area, pop into the Pop Up! Its at 23 Bunya St, Maleny.
Hopefully they then will be looking to fill another empty shopfront in town. Isnt that a brilliant idea? Like a moving gallery.
I am so proud of my mum.
Do you support local artists?

Loving them to death or providing a third eye My views on Tiger Tourism
Loving them to death or providing a third eye My views on Tiger Tourism

"A tiger is a large-hearted gentleman with boundless courage and that when he is exterminated - as exterminated he will be unless public opinion rallies to his support - India will be the poorer by having lost the finest of her fauna." - Jim Corbett
As I write this post, the Supreme Court of India is hearing a petition by Prayatna - a Bhopal based NGO led by prominent activist Ajay Dubey. The petition, amongst other things seeks to ban tiger tourism in the country as it exists today. The alternative they suggest is for tourism (read safaris) to happen in the fringes of the park, making the core zones of our tiger reserves inviolate. The rationale behind this is that if traditional forest dwellers have left their ancestral land to give the tigers solitude and peace, how can tourists still have access to these woods? There are theories which state that the tiger cannot breed in the constant presence of humans and therefore tourists should stay out. After all the Sariska tigers have not bred successfully since their reintroduction in 2005 - a reason for this (probably) being the presence of villages in the forest. Tourism doesnt also bring too many benefits to local communities. Krithi Karanths 2011 study titled Conservation Letters revealed some startling statistics - local residents get less than 0.5% of the revenues from wildlife tourism. Even more startling is the revelation is that the park itself gets less than 5% of the revenues and close to 95% goes into private hands.
So then, shouldnt we ban tourism? It seems to bring no benefits to the local community and it disturbs the tiger. If anything it seems to encroach on the tigers last strongholds. As it turns out, my view is quite the opposite. The tiger is Indias national animal. As Steve Winter would put it, the tiger is our bald eagle. The beauty of tiger tourism in this country is in the fact that anyone with ?500 ($9.17) can share a vehicle with other people and stand a chance to see the charismatic beast. People cant feel the desire to protect what they cant see or experience. If seeing a tiger in the wild becomes the privilege of just a handful of experts, it will probably mean an end to the love and passion several Indians feel for the beast and its protection. Last I checked, spreading the word was amongst the top few things one could do to save the tiger. When no one can see the tiger anymore, what word do you spread? That theres a mythical beast in the woods which incidentally we dont have access to anymore?
"Nobody will be interested in protecting something that they are not allowed to see or experience. Banning tourism in National Parks and sanctuaries will be disastrous for the tiger in particular, and an open invitation to poachers and the timber mafia." Belinda Wright

A few days back watchful tourists reported the presence of two suspicious youths in the core area of Tadoba Tiger Reserve. My friend Chirdeep wrote this rather sorrowful story of Maasti - the tiger with an amputated leg. The truth is that Maasti perhaps wouldnt even be alive today had it not been for a watchful wildlife enthusiast on safari. Tourism gives tiger conservation the third eye it woefully needs. In the current situation where patrolling is so ineffective that tigers get killed despite a red alert in the state, tourists end up being free watchdogs for the forest department. This is a service that we cant snub.
We cant wish away the issue of disturbance to tigers from tourists. That being said, we have to look at Tadoba and Ranthambhore - two of our most visited tiger reserves. Over the last year the tiger population at Tadoba has gone from 53 to 69. Ranthambhore has a baby boom despite the drones of tourists that visit the park. Theres circumstantial evidence in Kanha, Pench, Bandhavgarh and almost every other park that tigers are multiplying in the core zones despite tourism. Yes tourism needs regulation. Illegal constructions on the banks of the Kosi river need to stop. We need unhindered tiger corridors and if there are resorts that block this area, we need to bring them down. We need a strict clampdown on boorish behaviour in parks. Guides, mahouts and drivers need education to keep the interests of the animals first. We need to pay them well, so their livelihood isnt just dependent on the tips they collect in the seven months that the parks are open. As tourists we need to draw our own line of ethics. Do we want to do all it takes for that tiger sighting or are we willing to let go every now and then?

Theres no point in slamming the elephant assisted tiger sightings of Central India - they are perhaps the most organised and well behaved viewing opportunities for tourists. Under the supervision of park rangers, the elephants ferry tourists four at a time for a five minute, regulated view of the tiger. The tiger is free to move into the woods and if it moves in too deep, the elephants dont pursue. The mahouts keep the tourists in check. The tourist safaris are a different kettle of fish though. The guides and drivers are too scared of losing their tip to admonish ill-mannered guests. While that is the reality of todays situation, every tourist in the wild has a responsibility to self regulate.
Last but certainly not the least the forest department needs to relieve the pressure of tourism by creating alternate opportunities for visitors. The buffer zone safari at Tadoba, the promotion of Magadhi and Khitauli in Bandhavgarh, responsible fringe tourism by resorts like Camp Forktail Creek are all steps in the right direction. The tourism industry also needs a fair bit of transparency. The opaque, fax based booking system at Dhikala and Corbetts forest rest houses needs to go. The nexus of the Kosi lodges and the forest booking clerks (read this report) needs to break and make way for responsible tourism. The agent dominated safari booking system at Ranthambhore needs to go - it needs transparency in booking zones and vehicles. The whimsical allotment of prime routes to the tourism mafia needs to stop. The more we can weed out corruption from the wildlife tourism infrastructure in this country, the more accessible we make it to the common man. And after all, we cant save the tiger if the common man doesnt care about it.
"Wildlife tourists carry cameras, not axes. They do not poach, do not submerge forests with dams... They are being unjustifiably blamed for killing tigers." Vishal Singh - TOFT
I sincerely hope that the Supreme Court acts wisely in its decision on the Prayatna case. Tourism when well regulated can be a great tool for conservation. I cant express in words how it has opened my mind and enriched my life. I hope this doesnt remain a privilege I speak of in the past tense. The next generation of Indians deserves to still enjoy our wilderness just as I have in the past few years.

Make Your own My little sandbox
Make Your own My little sandbox
Just the other day I was looking around the internet for some sensory ideas. With the change in seasons, I am anticipating those cold (very cold, were in Vermont!) winter days when we can only get outside for a few minutes at a time. Around here our hands are covered all winter so although we dig, build and play in snow, much of a sensorial touching and feeling experience is limited. Last winter we had our indoor sandbox which provided some much appreciated sensory play. While I havent gotten an indoor sandbox going yet, I did come across a great little idea in the meantime. Have you seen these before?

Our sand is pretty well mixed with dirt, leaves and sticks from a summer of outdoor play, so I opted for using rice in our Little Sandbox. I had this miniature farm from long ago that fit perfectly.
After observing my daughters play, the rice has worked out well and is easier to clean up (they are good about not misusing it and can sweep it up independently if needed.)
They have enjoyed using it and I like that it provides the sensory experience of the rice along with encouraging creativity and imagination.

making my day
making my day

The Awesome Teenager is becoming more elusive and time spent with him is getting rarer. Thats how it goes with these teenager people, though, isnt it? A vague presence in your home, emerging for food and to request the reconnection of internet networks.... He is so clever and explains geeky stuff to m. He loves pop culture almost as much as me. And he still kisses us goodnight every night, so I think we are good.
The twins are hilarious and continually evolving. Eli has started using the word actually with alarming regularity. "Well, actually mummy, I just really need a little tiny bit of yoghurt." Well, if you actually need it. Not figuratively. All right then.
Jasper refers to Eli as "My little brother" or "My best friend Eli". Both are ridiculously adorable. He introduces Eli to me daily. "Mummy, this is my little brother Eli!" Complete with Game Show Host style hand gestures and intonations.
My Lovely Husband continues to be lovely. He supportive and encouraging. Sometimes, all I need is for him to say, "You look nice." and I am OK. I love that he MUST say heinous in a stupid way, repeatedly, every time we watch Law and Order SVU. I love that he makes Jasper laugh his weird dirty old man laugh.
Life is stupid and complicated and annoying a lot of the time. But then, its not. Its colouring in at a cafe. Its taking pictures in the sunlight. Its being with the man I love and the boys I have created. My days are made by the little tiny (actual) details.
What are the little things that make your day?

Loving my A C and the combo of Pineapple and Zucchini
Loving my A C and the combo of Pineapple and Zucchini
The weather has been EXTREMELY HOT this past week here in Southern NH. Temps have been in the high 90s to low 100s. Usually for the month of July we have temps in the high 70s to 80s sometimes the 90s but hardly ever in the 100s. Believe it or not I have baked more this past week than I have for the whole month of July. What is wrong with me?!
Through all my time baking this past week I have developed a very strong relationship with my A/C inside my house. Each time I have turned on the oven to pre-heat I bless and praise my A/C for its beautiful cool air it is providing us as it competes with the heat of the oven.
Just as I have shown appreciation and happiness to my air conditioner I have also grown to love the brilliant idea that combining pineapple with zucchini to make a quick and yummy bread is fabulously dlish. Oh. My. Yumminess. What a LOVELY pair these two make. The taste and texture of them together marry wonderfully into a quick sweet bread. I dont know why I havent seen such a concept until now. Have I been totally out of the loop not having the knowledge that by adding pineapple to a zucchini bread recipe is not that unusual? For those of you that have yet to see this amazing kind of recipe before definitely join me in stirring up a batch.
Not to worry this recipe makes TWO lovely loaves of bread - share one with others or plan ahead and freeze it for that perfect occasion that calls for a zucchini and pineapple bread.
Pineapple Zucchini Bread
(recipe discovered on Tasty Kitchen from member, sns717)
Ingredients:
3 whole eggs
1 cup oil (I used canola oil)
2 cups sugar
2 tsp vanilla extract
2 cups zucchini, shredded
small can of chunk pineapple - I cut my chunk pineapple into 4ths (the original recipe call for crushed pineapple)
3 cups AP flour
2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
3/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1 cup chopped walnuts, optional
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease two 9x5 bread loaf pans and set aside.
2. In a large bowl beat eggs to blend. Add in oil, sugar and vanilla extract. Beat all together for a couple of minutes until mixture becomes thick and creamy.
3. Next add in shredded zucchini, pineapple, flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, spices and nuts (if you wish).
4. Divide batter into two prepared pans. Pop in oven and bake for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into center comes out clean. Cool breads for 10 minutes before removing from pans to cool completely.
Yumminess!
For all of you enjoying this HOT weather, stay cool!
Happy Pineapple Zucchini Bread Baking!
