There are a few special times every year when I feel like a complete and total crazy person - this week, known as "CTN-Expo Week" is one of those times. I wanted to make sure, though, with all of the prepping and craziness, that I took a moment to update this little space to let everyone know about all of the exciting things that make this week so crazy (in a good way!) So here goes!

Im so happy to say that the Lovely girls are getting together one more time to chat and open the first and only American version of the Gallerie Arludik show from this past June! All six of us will be in attendance on Thursday night, and we will partake in a roundtable discussion moderated by the one and only Mr. Mike Gabriel! I think this is the official opening of the CTN-Expo -lots of new original artwork and there will be shuttles running back and forth to the gallery from the convention hall all weekend. If you are in town, you should definitely stop by!

It is that time again! I will be set up very near to my usual spot (close to the front doors) at the CTN-Expo at the Burbank Marriott. In addition to my usual haul of prints and books, I will be debuting the first batch of 2015 Calendar Girls and Calendar Girl Refill packs! I will probably be bringing a limited number of Calendar Girls with me to the show each day, so try to swing by my table early if you are interested!
And for everyone who cant make it to LA but would still like a Calendar Girl - I have good news! We have a larger edition (of 200) this year, and will most likely be putting nearly half of them up in the shop before the holidays! Im thinking that thew will be going up in batches, but I will flesh out that plan and post more on it soon. For now, just know that they are coming!
I hope to see many friendly faces (both new and old) at the expo this weekend! If you plan to attend, I will apologize in advance for being at all "off". So far this week, forgetting what day it is, not knowing my current location, and losing my thoughts in the middle of a sentence have been alarmingly common occurrences, and while I will try to remedy that before Friday, just be warned.

Lots of Testing Going on at Crestwood
Last week the students completed their first FAST test. This is a test that is given to all students in the state of Iowa to measure their individual fluency and reading comprehension/skills. The fluency assessment is given to the students by myself, the teacher, one on one, and the other part, titled AReading, is done individually on the iPads. These scores are then used to determine which students need interventions in the area of literacy. Scores from these assessments will be shared with parents at conferences in November. Students will retake the same FAST assessments mid year and at the end of the year.
This week we will be taking the MAPs testing. Hopefully everyone is familiar with these assessments as the students have done them since 1st grade. We will be taking Reading on Tuesday, Language on Wednesday, and Math on Thursday. These assessments are not timed, students work at their own pace, and scores are analyzed by teachers upon completion.
The students will also be taking their first math assessment on Friday for unit 1. It is a review unit that the 3rd grade teachers have revised to match the Iowa Core. This assessment will cover recognizing time, counting money, making change, recognizing patterns in numbers and basic beginning skills. I have worked with a few students on advanced skills, such as elapsed time, so a those students may have this on their assessment as well.
So it is a busy week for 3B. I know they are going to knock my socks off with their great effort. Parents at home, remember to make sure your child gets a good nights rest and eats a great breakfast every morning to help them be successful at school not only on assessments but daily activities.

I have written a caption picture book (no illustrations) and was curious if I should use the word "caption" in my queries to identify it as such. Also, should I mention the word length (under 500 words)?As the term "caption book" is more common among educators than other people, I would only recommend using it only if you are submitting to an educational publisher. Otherwise, call it a leveled reader or a beginning reader.
There are very specific guidelines for vocabulary, line length, sentence length, etc. in leveled readers, so I hope you know what youre doing. Im sure beginning readers of every kind look very easy to people unfamiliar with them, but creating an honestly entertaining text for children who are still sounding out words is HARD. Current favorite: The Cat On the Mat Is Flat

Making soy milk at home
In the work fridge, we have a selection of skim, low-fat and full-fat milk, and then there is soy milk for the lactose intolerant (why do we have so much choices these days?!)I think I wouldnt find it too difficult if I was lactose intolerant as I love soy too much (or perhaps not, can you imagine soy panna cotta?!) I always find myself pouring both milk and soy into my mug for that faint taste of soy at work. It might be because I grew up drinking it as its a very popular breakfast drink in Taiwan.
Ever since my local Coles decided not to stock my favourite Bonsoy anymore, I have been making my own at home. As I do not own a soy milk maker at home, everything has to be done manually but it really doesnt take too much time!
I prefer to to use organic soy beans (from health food stores) as you can really taste the difference.
Anyways, here are the instructions, fellow soy-lovers (and Im not expecting many)...

Step1: Ingredients
You need about 125 g whole soya beans to make 1 liter of soy milk.
Step2: Soaking and dehulling the soya beans
Clean the soya beans and soak them in water overnight (at least 10 hours). Although not necessary, you can remove the hulls be kneading the soya beans and flushing the loose hulls with water. After soaking overnight, the beans should expand at least twice their original size.
Step3: Grinding the soya beans
Grind the soaked soya beans and 1 liter water in a blender for a few minutes until its as fine as possible. (I used 1 cup of soaked soy with 4 cups of water as my ratio).
Step 4: Sieve
Sieve the mixture trough a cheese cloth or muslin cloth and recover the soy milk. The insoluble material which remains on the sieve is called okara, and can be used as an ingredient for bread making!
Step5: Boiling the soy milk
Heat the soy milk till boiling point and continue boiling for about 5 to 10 minutes. After cooling, the soy milk is ready and can be kept in the fridge for another 3 days.
Note: I actually steamed my soy in my huge rice cooker as it is less of a hassle than boiling.
Step 6: Final step
Pour it into a container through the sieve again (just to remove that extra insoluble material for a finer texture).
I tend to keep the left over okara - or insoluble part of soy and use that to make shallot pancake...picture/recipes to come later! Nothing should go to waste right? ;-)
Voila - youve just made your own soy milk!
So, how do you normally flavour your soy milk?
I usually cook sliced ginger with dark brown sugar and water on a stove until it boils, then pour it into my unflavoured soy.
Or, I just melt Okinawan Kurozato (a type of coarse brown sugar similar to Muscovado sugar that I buy when Im in Japan) with hot soy...
Ready to pour hot soy over pieces of kurozato sugar in the mug!

Im just getting ready to buckle down and send out a bunch of queries for my middle grade manuscript, but it suddenly occurred to me that this time of year might be the worst time to try to get agents and editors attention. As the holidays approach, do agents and editors tend to push stuff off their desks to clear the decks for their time off, and therefore reject more than usual?Yes!
Or do they store up queries and manuscripts, knowing they might have more spare time to read over the holidays?Yes!
Or does it just not matter?Yes!
Look, you have to try to remember that there are tons of different editors, and theyre not all using the same brain. There are about as many different workstyles as there are editors. So some of them will do one of the things youve mentioned above, and some will do other things you havent even thought of. I plan to burn all my outstanding reading in a bonfire while cackling / singing christmas carols.

The queen.
In order to stay inspired as an artist, I find that it is best for me to constantly have multiple ideas and projects brewing. Every once in a while, though, I will have one project that I am just dying to work on. It brews and builds and eventually becomes an all consuming monster that absolutely has to get out or it will wreck me.
Enter this familiar face/hairdo/dress combo.
Ever since I worked on the Maleficent piece for the Sleeping Beauty Blu-Ray (which I realize Ive never posted about….more on that later) Ive been intrigued by creating fully sculptural paper pieces. They are so much more labor intensive and harder to plan than my usual relief fare, but part of what I find inspiring about creating any artwork is what I dont know...and subsequently learn in the process. And these pieces involve lots of learning. And failing. And learning some more. Sometimes (aka a lot of times) tears.
I learned A LOT while working on this piece, and I considered starting over from scratch quite often. In fact, as I went to photograph her to get final approval from Disney, I very nearly scrapped her altogether. It took my much more sane, balanced husband saying "What?! What are you talking about?!" to draw me back from the edge. I suppose the closer a project is to you, the harder it is to see clearly with objective eyes. Elsa means a lot to me - I wanted to be able to do her justice.
This piece is titled "One with the Wind and Sky", and it is my love note to her. It is my love note to Frozen - to the people who let me be a part of this wonderful film and for the two years that I was allowed to help craft it. To Idina for lending her perfect voice, and for all of it for making pretty much all of my dreams come true. Geeze - we are in danger of having more Frozen gush sessions than mermaid posts around here.
This post is several weeks late - I had initially intended on posting her the day that she would debut at the Wonderground Gallery in Downtown Disneyland, but unfortunately a stomach flu put a wrench in all of my grand-master plans. Im on the mend, though, and thought that she would be worth posting anyway. Thank you to everyone who has already made the trip to see her in Disneyland, and for all of your kind words of support. Happy Holidays to all!

Make Khawa Khoya Mawa at home!
Vineela has chosen Milk as this months theme for Jihva for Ingredients. Not just milk, but all milk products too. That makes it simple, right? Wrong! That gives you so much choice, that you take about a month to decide what your entry for this event will be. That again has a few hurdles. For example, the main ingredient. You realise that you have always *bought* the main ingredient that goes into the dish, that you fancy making for the D-Day.
Well, now the you in the above story is me. (Oh, stop it, Vaish. Were sick of your non-existent humour.) - ignores and continues - And the ingredient in question is Khawa or Khoya or Mawa, which are milk solids obtained by evaporating milk. Which is usually done by the neighbourhood Mithai vendor. Nobody makes it at home, at least in the circles that I know. Unless you are living in Germany...
So, thats what I did. I made Khoya at home. Using an uncomplicated, quick method, that I found here.
Recipe for Khawa/Khoya/Mawa
Makes 1 cup.
Ingredients:
1 cup milk powder (I used the variety with 3.5% fat.)
approx. ¼ cup water
a few drops of ghee
Also:
a pressure cooker / steamer &
a metal vessel that fits into it
a piece of cotton cloth (May I suggest an old handkerchief of your husband? ;-))
Method:
1. Take the milk powder into a shallow bowl/dish for kneading. Add a little water.
2. Start kneading, and add water as you go. We want to knead it into a soft dough as that for chapatis.
3. Finish kneading with a few drops of ghee on your fingers. Shape it into a ball. Like so.
Khoya khoya chand...? :)
4. Place this ball in the piece of cloth. Tie the cloth in a bundle. Place this bundle into the metal vessel.5. Place this vessel into the pressure cooker / steamer and steam for 10 minutes. (Like idlis; without the weight/whistle.)
6. Take the vessel out and let it cool for about five minutes. Untie the bundle.
Khoya is ready for you.
Khoya is well-made, if there are lots of tiny holes inside, like a sponge
Before you use this Khoya in any preparation, a few
Notes:
1. First off, lets not forget that this is just a substiute and not the real thing. You can use this homemade Khoya in almost all preparations that ask for this milk product. However, the dish will not have exactly the same texture and taste that it would, had the real Khoya been used.
2. It retains some of the milk powder smell, much of which goes away once cooked (like when cooked with carrots to make Gajar Halwa).
3. One biggest advantage of it is, that it has much less fat compared to the real McCoy. Sounds nice, no? :)
I am sending this post as an early entry to Vineela for this months JFI. I posted it early coz I thought it might help those who want to make something with Khoya, but have no access to a Mithai vendor.

Lee Kaloidis, whom Ive referenced a few times in this blog, has created a Flickr album of his Whale Songs series, showing it in grayscale as well as in color. He says:
I would not say that a painting cant be successful if color if it is not successful in black and white, but it does seem like a good tool for looking at your work in progress. Seeing your work minus the strong language of color allows you to see things you wont see otherwise. This is similar to seeing your work from a distance, through a camera lens, or on a computer screen. It gives you a different view, which can be revealing.
I just did a few grayscale versions of some 8"x8" print/collages to see how they looked:

Lovely at Wonderground Gallery Part 1
I was asked to create some new artwork to be released at the event, and while I had quite a few initial ideas, top priority went to this young lady. Have I mentioned that Im a fan? No? Huh. Well, I am. It may be to the point of unhealthy obsession, but I try to channel that energy in the most productive ways possible. Thus, very large paper-cut artworks are born.
This piece is titled Whats a Fire?, and stands at about 36 x 16 inches, making it one of the larges pieces I have worked on in some time. I fear that I may sound like a broken record for those of you who have been around for a while, but Part of Your World was my introduction to pure magic, and remains the standard that I compare all movie moments to. I could go on and on about why it is just perfection, but the bottom line is that it makes me feel. And I love that.
The original piece will make its debut on Saturday at 11am, and I believe that prints and possibly a few other items featuring the artwork will be produced through the gallery as well. Im sure that the six of us will be taking pictures the day of, so stay tuned on instagram and twitter (and who knows, maybe even Periscope?) for real-time updates.
And as you may be able to tell from the title of this post, this is just Part 1 of what I have in store for Wonderground. Im really excited about Part 2 , and am hoping to share with you tomorrow:)
