lucys room update
This summer weve been in organization and clean up mode and one of the most important spaces on our list was Lucys room. At only 100 square feet, the space is pretty limited in how we can configure things. And as she has gotten older, weve accumulated a lot of stuff that she has now grown out of so it was time to update and organize!
The first thing I did was paint the wall. As my long time readers know, I never want to feel like my home is "too precious" to take risks and try something unique, creative or even weird. While I love home decor shows, magazine and blogs- I also think it is easy to fall into trendy, safe and practical thinking when it comes to your house. I am not safe nor am I practical and I tackle most DIY projects like an artist. I love color, pattern and I believe that paint is one of the most affordable and easy ways to transform just about anything in your home into art!
Over a year ago Lucy asked for a painting of Paris on her wall (you can see it HERE) and when it came time to change her room, she was excited to have a new mural on the wall. After lots of brainstorming together she asked for a butterfly garden! So I got busy making it happen!
I started by painting a fast coat of white primer over the top of the old mural. Once that white paint was dry, I added color. Then I began painting the designs. Here is a little peek into the beginning of this process.
I like to "draw" my designs with bold black lines- I use acrylic paint mixed with a little bit of water and then I use a brush.
After the black lines are dry, I go back in and add color to some of them and then other designs I let the color of background show through. The result is a really dynamic, bold and colorful mural.
While a mural like this might be too busy or colorful for some people, we love the way it looks and we also love that it feels like we are living inside of a sketchbook page!
Another big change we made to Lucys room was adding lots of storage and bought her a new bed. We picked out the Hemnes bed from IKEA because it is big enough for her to grow into and it also has TONS of storage space below.
Since the mural is colorful and busy, we kept the rest of the room neutral and simple.
We moved her little desk (that has been in the dining room) into her room and created a small work space.
We also made use of the ClosetMaid Cubicle Organizers for all of her toys and books. I LOVE these cube organizers!!
The end result is a really fun and whimsical room that is perfect for Lucy to grow into!

Master Bedroom Update Philly Row House Reno
How about we kick off the new year with the master bedroom progress? Since I left you with a teaser of it in my last post, thats probably a good place to start. Heres what its looking like currently:
If you remember the before and real estate photos, you might recall that this room was, for lack of a better word, poop brown, and had the same wall-to-wall carpet as the rest of the house. We ripped that carpet out, installed beautiful new hardwood floors, painted the walls and trim, and moved on in.
This room has a lot of wall bump-outs (making it almost cross-shaped), and therefore furniture placement is a little tricky. After starting with putting the bed on the left wall, which is where the previous owners had theirs, we quickly realized that best place for the bed was actually under the windows.
Dont be scared to put the bed under the windows, friends! Its totally ok! Ill be showing you some great examples of that in my next post.
Having the bed under the windows made the room feel so much more open, and it helped with the "flow" of the room giving us easy access both sides of the bed, closet and dresser.
I absolutely love this light fixture we put up (its from Lowes - the full source list for this room is at the end of the post). It was the first fixture I picked out for the house and its a great focal point for this room.
The closet is on the wall opposite the bed and - amazingly - fits all of our hanging clothes! I did a major closet clean-out before we moved and I think that helped :). I would love to put some sort of closet organization system in there at some point, but were happy with the amount of space it gives us!
Im thrilled with how well this room has come together so far. The only new items we purchased for this room are the long curtain rod and the light fixture. Everything else we had before. I have a running list of projects for this space in my head (and every other room in the house, ha!), but Im trying to take things one day at a time and live in it for awhile before making any big decisions.
One project that Ill probably tackle sooner than later is a new headboard. Since the bed is in front of the windows, I want something thats a little shorter to let as much light in as possible and not block the windows as much. Itll probably be another upholstered headboard, but well see! The other one will likely move to the guest room.
Thats about it for today! Lets take one last look at the master...
