Math Fun with Summer Produce
Math Fun with Summer Produce
Summer brings abundance of math toys. Who needs cheerios or marbles when you have fragrant, smooth, sweet, colorful delights to count, compare, measure and then gobble up. How many peas are there inside each green pea pod? Do all the pods from the same plant host the same number of peas?

Check it out yourself and make a bar plot to describe the distribution of peas in your snap pea pods.

Heirloom tomatoes: yellow, green, purple, red. What color is the sweetest? What is the sourest? Heirlooms are expensive, but their rare availability makes me splurge on them once or twice a year. This year I decided that our kids are big enough to be able to enjoy the tomatoes exquisite taste. We did heirloom tomato sampling and ran a contest.

We cut baby heirlooms into four little pieces. Each of us tried a few pieces of each color and ranked the colors by their sweetness (5 was the sweetest, 2 the most sour). Surprisingly, our opinions varied vastly. We created a chart and added all the ranks. Purple tomatoes were voted the sweetest, yellow grimacingly sour. This chart is still hanging on our refrigerator to reinforce the memories. Kids loved the game and a week later suggested that we do the same with the canollis that a guest brought.

Plums: seductively purple, innocently yellow, confidently bright magenta. Their variety and colors can compete with a lipstick selection. Can you tell a plum type by its taste? Cut them into pieces, close your eyes and see if you can do better than chance (guessing correctly over 50% of the time for two types tasted in equal amounts, 33% for three etc 100%/n types)? Can you distinguish between plums by shape, with your eyes still closed?
How many large plums are there in a pound? How many little plums? How many little plums can you trade for one large plum?
Do larger plums always have a larger seed?
You can eat your fruits and veggies and do math in the same time.

Carrots:
What can you do, what can you do, what can you do with the carrots?
You can measure your height with them. 10 carrots tall?
You can count your bites while eating them. 9 bites?
You can imagine you are a Musketeer and fence with them.
Wait, you can even scratch your back or head with them.
And, for the finale, be adventurous and swallow them!
(inspired by What can you do with a shoe? by Beatrice de Regniers and Maurice Sendak)

P.S. Scientific studies show that kids brains take a reverse evolutionary zip during summer month and by September they are two months behind in math and reading. Check out this Math Resources page for more pointers to math-infused books and games.
Here is a great fruit puzzle to brainstorm as a family: Mess at the Marrakesh Market.

Making a Summer Flag
Making a Summer Flag
My daughters love flags. With the fourth of July coming up and with summer in full swing, I thought "we should really make some flags this year!" After some searching on the internet I found Dharma Trading sells small nylon flags. I purchased two flags ($1.50 each) and we were ready to go. Nylon dyes the same as silk so we followed the same kool-aid process we used to dye our playsilks.
To dye the flags, I purchased different colored packets of kool-aid and each of my daughters chose a color. My oldest daughter wanted to tie dye her flag using rubber bands to create decorative circles. My youngest daughter chose a solid background and wanted to decorate her flag using permanent markers.
I heated up the water in the microwave until "very hot." I added a splash of vinegar and my daughter added the packet of kool-aid.
I have never tie dyed anything in my life, so we just knotted the fabric with rubber bands in different places.
The flags were added into the kool-aid, water, and vinegar solution and stirred around until it was the desired shade. I rinsed the flags in cold water until it ran clear (not very long).
The flags were then hung up to dry.
We purchased some 3/4 inch dowels from the hardware store that fit perfectly (if they hadnt fit I was planning to hot glue them on but it wasnt necessary).
The summer flags are posted in front of the sandbox. They pull them out of the ground when they want to play with them and I simply put them back into the ground, hammering it down with a rock, when they are done!

London Summer and some photos
London Summer and some photos
Here are some photos from that gig a few weeks ago. That one where I nearly died of heat exhaustion and then managed to sustain a rather humiliating head injury. In the following photos you will witness the boiled look I was sporting that evening.
London bakes today. People in the office are pushing boundaries by wackily eating ice-lollies at their desks. Sometimes they pause between licks to make the obligatory hilarious comments about global warming.
This week I am going to go Belated Birthday Shopping with my Dad. I will try to steer him towards the pony shop, but if that fails I am going to settle for a microphone and P.A. As in public address, not a personal assistant. Actually, though, if I could combine the pony with the personal assistant I would really feel Id hit the jackpot. Then I could give it orders down my microphone. "Eat that hay!", or "Swish your tail!". Stuff like that.
Impish Sophie Sister was over from Paris this weekend, which was delightful. She stayed with me in Brixton, something I am very keen for her to do on a more regular basis.
Anyway, here are some pictures. Please remember that it was eighteen hundred degrees in there. I am not normally that neon.

Make your Summer Plans with a Welcome Summer Banner 2!
Make your Summer Plans with a Welcome Summer Banner 2!
I hope everyone out there in enjoying their summer break! I sure am . In case you missed this banner last week in my Super Mom blog hop with Kelli at Random Thoughts of a Super Mom.....you can check it out below!
I like for Summer at our house to be SUPER FUN, of course!

I like for Summer at our house to be SUPER FUN, of course!
But I wanted to be sure that we were doing the important things as well (reading, making bank deposits in their savings accounts{and that means earning money by doing chores}, and working on goals (CubScouts, Piano, etc)! I made this banner last year to help be sure we were getting the things done that we needed to get done and mixing the right amount of FUN in with it!

First, I printed out little tags with all of the things we were planning to do this summer.

Here is my list:
Surprise!
Something Special! (this is great for those one time things)
Extra Fun (this was for when I added something on to one of our weekly activites)
School (they went to vacation bible school and a summer play school hosted by a local preschool)
Playdate (when a friend has us/them over)
Picnic at the Park
Storytime (lots of book stores host these)
Library
Meet Daddy (sometimes we meet for lunch)
Going to a Movie (we love Regals free movie program)
Going out to Dinner
Leaving on a Trip!
Playgroup (there are several that we occasionally attend)
Party
Roaring Springs (our local water park)
Bank (they get to make deposits and my husband matches it, this means they have to do their chores)
Having Friends Over
Working on Goals
Volleyballin (sometimes I meet up with friends to play)
Water Day (there are lots of fun pools, splash parks, and beaches on the lakes or rivers)
And here is how they look once I cut them, punched a hole in the top, and put a piece of jute rope through the hole (this makes it easy to pull them out of the envelope).

Next, make a pocket for them.
Fold a piece of cardstock and staple the sides. Make a label for the front and distress it with an ink pad, then punch a hole and tie on an 18 inch piece of jute rope or ribbon (tie it onto the wide ribbon when you get to that point).

Then, to make your envelopes:
My SIL, Jen, and I shared a box of these from Office Max. I think there was 500 in the box. I printed the days of the week, distressed the edges with an ink pad, and glued them on. Then I punched a hole in the top and hung it from an 18 inch piece of jute rope or ribbon.

At this point you could be done by just hanging the days of the week onto a thicker ribbon!
Or you can make the whole Welcome Summer Banner to make it SUPER cute.
Heres How:
First, get some chipboard shapes (they come in a "book" of 5) and some chipboard letters (or use vinyl).
I got mine at Michaels, but I heard you can sometimes find them at Archivers in the $1 section.

Mod Podge decorative paper onto them, turn them over and cut the excess paper off with an exacto knife.

Then sand them to get the edges nice and smooth. Distress them with an ink pad if desired. Glue the chipboard letters on to make your words.

Punch holes in the tops and hang onto a wide ribbon.

Leave enough room on the ends of your wide ribbon to hang. String one or two ribbons through your chipboard and tie it to the larger ribbon.

My kids LOVE to take the tags out and see what is in store for the day and the week!
