Loving the Global Read Aloud

Loving the Global Read Aloud

In a previous post I mentioned and shared information about the Global Read Aloud, a world wide collaborative project where schools around the world read the same books and collaborate virtually about their reading.  We are currently reading The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.   To say the students are loving it would be an understatement!  They are so into this book and never want me to stop reading!  As I said in the previous post about the Global Read Aloud, it is one of the best collaborative projects I have been involved in, and it is living up to that this year as well.
skyping with 3rd graders in Wisconsin

Yesterday we had the pleasure of skyping with some 3rd graders from Wisconsin and sharing our thoughts about what we have read.  Both classes had read to chapter 9 so we prepared questions beforehand to ask one another.  Of course, as this sometimes happens, when we were ready to Skype, our computer and Apple TV froze up and would not work in the classroom so we just skyped on our iPad, which worked fine.  We were ready with a backup plan!

The students on both ends shared a lot of deep thoughts about the reading and are all excited to continue reading and share more of our thoughts along the way.

Last week, we chatted virtually with Mrs. Malphys class in Wisconsin through on online program called TACKK.  Teachers post a question and students can sit and type answers, reply to one another, and communicate without opening their mouths or really seeing one another.  The focus question, of course, revolved around the book we are reading.  You could have heard a pin drop in the room as the students were so quiet and engaged.
Students chatting with Wisconsin students using TACKK

It was great in the fact that as some of my students in 3B were typing their answers and thoughts, some of Mrs. Malphys class were also on and responding to my 3B students instantly. Their faces were priceless.  One student even commented, "This is so great.  I am chatting with someone about a book and she is not even here!".   We plan to do more TACKK discussions in the future as well.

LOL! Did you see the Game Between Brazil vs Germany Read 16 hilarious Comments the commentators made

LOL! Did you see the Game Between Brazil vs Germany Read 16 hilarious Comments the commentators made

Lmaooo, please hold something while reading through so you
wouldn't slip off.

1. I have never seen a goal less celebrated in my life

2. The Brazilians can't wait to return to the dressing room
which will be their sanctuary for now

3. This is the kind of score line that can make grey hair turn
white

4. filipe scolari is looking 4 somewhere to hide.

5. Brazil have Neymar. Argentina have Messi. Portugal have
Ronaldo. Germany have a team

6. Brazil used up all its energy singing the National anthem.

7. "Dante has just collected a yellow card to complete his
day".

8. "The referee is considering not giving any extra time, to
save Brazil from further humiliation "

9. I can't remember the last time the Brazilians had a shot on
target " he said that on the first half.

10. 20mins into the 2nd half, he said "Brazil has not conceded a worldcup goal since 39mins ago"

11. "Germany are getting goals and the Brazilians are getting
confused."

12. About 3x minutes into the match, (Germany 5 vs Brazil 0)
Commentator: I'm absolutely sure that most of the television
sets in Brazil would have been switched off by now.

13. Comentator 1: I mean we've seen something like this.
Germany lead Sweden 4 in the first half and sweden
equalised, so same can be said for Brazil.
Comentator 2: you forget to add that sweden is a better
team.

14. "Oscar just scored the most pointless goal in a World
Cup!!"

15. If your name begins with a 'K', you are likely to get a goal
today. – Commentator

16. Commentator @ 7th GoaL: – "Now Jim I think someone
else has Brasil's controller. They'd better hand it back to
Scolari before I quit!"

Mahira Khan’s scenes CUT SHORT in Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees – read details

Mahira Khan’s scenes CUT SHORT in Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees – read details

Ouch! Pakistani beauty, Mahira Khan, who was to make her big Bollywood debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Raees might now only be visible in a few scenes. Looks like Fawad Khan’s fate in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has been passed on to Mahira in Raees! A leading tabloid has reported that Miss Khan’s role in the film has been truncated. It is believed that certain scenes of the actress were left to be shot but since she won’t be coming back to India (for obvious political reasons), the entire song has been chopped. Starting from her introduction scene to a romantic sequence she shares with SRK in the film, have all been sacrificed as she won’t be flying down, neither will the crew fly out for her.

“Mahira is an attractive and popu lar Pakistani actress and Raees is her big-ticket Bollywood launch. But while she does play Shah Rukh’s love interest, it is not really a romantic film. Her role is like Parveen Babi’s in Yash Chopra’s 1975 crime-drama Deewaar. That one revolved around two warring brothers, Vijay and Ravi, played by Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor. This one revolves around the conflict between Shah Rukh Khan who plays a bootlegger, Raees Alam, and ACP Ghulam Patel enacted by Nawaz (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) who is on his trail. So, it wasn’t difficult to trim her role which has been done with the intention of not hurting public sentiment,“ stated a source from the unit. (ALSO READ: Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil and Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees clash is still on)

This sure is sad for the actress, who didn’t even get a chance to show her talent in Bollywood yet. On the day of Madhur Bhandarkar’s birthday, Shah Rukh had shot his introduction scenes in Madh Island. The scenes shall be wrapped within two or three days max. However, there won’t be any introduction scenes for Mahira, neither would there be the decided romantic track with Shah Rukh. The last time Khan came to India to shoot for Raees was when we spotted her in Bhuj, Gujarat, as she drove off in a jeep with Khan saab. Having chopped quite a lot of scenes of Mahira from Raees to avoid the politicos’ attack on the film, would the perils for the Rahul Dholakia film reduce?

After all, it is still clashing with Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil. What are your thoughts? Do you think it’s unfair to have chopped her scenes from the film? Tell us in the comments section below. Stay tuned to this space for more updates on Raees right here!
